Will Rogers: Larger Than Life
&
Shooting Star: Annie Oakley,
The Legend

(both books by Debbie Dadey, published by Walker)

There are many fascinating characters from history! Read the books Will Rogers: Larger Than Life and Shooting Star: Annie Oakley The Legend. Use them to help you combine a biography with a tall tale that incorporates a little science, too!
  • Who is a famous historical figure you would like to know about? Write his or her name here!

    ______________________________________________________
  • Research to discover at least five interesting achievements about the person you selected. Write your facts below.
  1. ______________________________________________________
  2. ______________________________________________________
  3. ______________________________________________________
  4. ______________________________________________________
  5. ______________________________________________________
  • Next, do a little research to help you brainstorm naturally occurring landmarks such as volcanoes, famous mountain peaks, specific rivers, lakes or other landmarks in which you’re interested. List the interesting landmarks you found out about below.
  1. ______________________________________________________
  2. ______________________________________________________
  3. ______________________________________________________

  • Are you ready to put it all together? Write a tall tale that exaggerates your character’s interesting achievements. Go wild! Try to show how your character’s achievements are responsible for naturally occurring landmarks! As you write, remember the elements of a tall tale:
  1. Something the main character does creates a natural phenomenon.
  2. They are often set in the "untamed" west of North America.
  • It’s not too late for the truth! Don’t forget a paragraph or so at the end of your story telling the real achievements of the historical figure you researched!
  • Writing tall tales is fun. Being a tall tale hero might be even better! If you could be a tall tale hero, what would you do? List at least five accomplishments you would like to make.
  1. ______________________________________________________
  2. ______________________________________________________
  3. ______________________________________________________
